Under Ofcom rules, some providers like BT, Sky, and Virgin Media allow you to exit without penalties if your broadband speeds don’t meet their guaranteed minimums. You’ll need to:

However, if you signed up for your current deal before 12th September 2024, you may still need to contact your existing provider to cancel.
What If My New Provider Can’t Arrange the Switch?
If your new provider is unable to manage the switch for you, it’s easy to do it yourself. Follow these simple steps:
- Contact your new provider to arrange the transfer date.
- Book the transfer date with them.
- Inform your current provider that you’ll be cancelling on the go-live date of your new service.
If your current provider operates on a different network—such as Virgin Media, Hyperoptic, or other independent FTTP providers—you’ll need to contact them directly to confirm your cancellation. Simply provide them with your go-live date to ensure a smooth transition.
Do I Need to Tell My Current Provider Before I Switch Broadband Deals?
For deals signed after 12th September 2024, you don’t need to inform your current provider.
If your deal predates this change, or your provider operates on a separate network, you’ll need to contact them to let them know you’re leaving. We can also do this on your behalf.
Providers such as Virgin Media, Hyperoptic, and most independent FTTP operators will require direct notice.
How Much Does Switching Cost?
It is generally free to switch broadband, unless you’re terminating your contract early.
However, your new provider may charge one-off or monthly fees for:
- Setup costs
- A new router
- Technical support
- Optional extras, like Wi-Fi boosters or set-top boxes
Every provider has its own fee structure, so be sure to check before committing to a new deal.
